A Volunia nevű keresőmotor egyben egyfajta közösségi háló is lesz - mondta Massimo Marchiori, amikor bemutatta a honlapot. Elmondása szerint a Volunia nemcsak az internetes tartalmakban való keresést, hanem azt is lehetővé teszi, hogy a felhasználók felvegyék a kapcsolatot más regisztrált tagokkal, akik ugyanazt az oldalt nyitották meg.
"Az internet vibráló hely, ahol az információk mellett emberek is vannak. A közösségi dimenzió kéznél van, már csak előtérbe kell helyezni" - fogalmazott Marchiori, aki meg van győződve arról, hogy a Volunia által képviselt funkciókat néhány éven belül más keresőoldalak - többek közt a Google és a Yahoo - is használni fogják.
Marchiori fejlesztette ki az 1990-es években a Hyper Search nevű keresőmotort. Az ennek alapjául szolgáló algoritmust azonban nem védette le, így azt később a Google alapítói fel tudták használni saját keresőmotorjuk kiépítésekor.
Az olasz professzor egykor a neves Massachusettsi Műszaki Egyetem (MIT) tanára volt, jelenleg a Padovai Egyetemen oktat. Új találmánya, a Volunia napokon belül 12 nyelven lesz elérhető a világhálón.
